What is the ruling when a traveler completes the permissible duration of wiping (one day and night) and then becomes a resident?
Chapter on Wiping over the Khuffayn (Leather Socks)
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
According to the second scholarly opinion, a traveler who has wiped for a day and a night or more, and then settles (becomes a resident or arrives at a destination), must remove the khuff and proceed based on the ruling for a resident. This ruling is attributed to Al-Shafi'i and the Ahl al-Ra'y (Hanafi school), and no contrary opinion is known. The rationale is that once one becomes a resident, it is impermissible to maintain the wiping allowance for a traveler, which is agreed upon. Moreover, wiping is an act of worship whose ruling differs based on residence or travel; thus, if it is initiated during travel but the person becomes a resident during its execution, the ruling of residence prevails, similar to the ruling for prayer.

Following this principle, if a person wipes for more than a day and a night, enters prayer while intending to reside, their prayer becomes void because the wiping itself becomes invalid, leading to the invalidation of their state of purification, and consequently, the invalidation of the prayer. Similarly, if one begins prayer while traveling on a ship, and the ship enters a city during the prayer, the prayer is void for this reason.
