Primary text

The use of gold and silver utensils for consumption is definitively prohibited (*haram*). This is the established doctrine of Abu Hanifa, Malik, and Al-Shafi'i, with no known disagreement among scholars. The prohibition is established based on the Prophet's explicit prohibitions against drinking from or eating off gold and silver vessels, accompanied by severe warnings regarding the Fire of Hell (Jahannam). The underlying reason for this prohibition is the vanity, arrogance, and the breaking of the hearts of the poor that this practice entails.
