Primary text

A woman who has a previous cycle pattern but whose blood flow is undifferentiated, meaning it does not distinguish itself by differing qualities, or whose flow is less than the minimum duration of menses or more than the maximum duration, is considered to have no discernment. If she previously had a regular cycle before experiencing irregular bleeding (Istihada), she must refrain from prayer for the duration of her established customary days. After these days pass, she performs Ghusl and thereafter makes Wudu (ablution) for the time of each prayer and prays. This position is held by Abu Hanifa and Al-Shafi'i.

Imam Malik holds that the customary cycle is not to be considered; rather, discernment is what matters. If she lacks discernment, she must practice Istithar (precautionary abstinence) for three days following the usual length of her cycle, provided this period does not exceed fifteen days, after which she is considered to be in Istihada and must perform Wudu for each prayer time.
