What is the ruling if a woman sees bleeding cease before forty days of postpartum bleeding (nifas)?
Chapter on Menstruation
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
If the postpartum bleeding ceases before forty days, the woman is considered pure; she must perform ghusl (ritual bath), and she must pray and fast. It is recommended that her husband refrain from intercourse with her until the forty days are complete. This recommendation is based on the narration concerning Uthman ibn Abi al-As, who advised his wife not to approach him before forty days. The underlying reason for the recommendation is the uncertainty regarding the return of blood during intercourse, which would constitute intercourse during nifas. However, the ruling that she performs acts of worship is definitive because she is legally treated as pure.
