Which is superior concerning wiping over the leather socks (khuffayn): wiping or washing the feet?
Chapter on Wiping over the Khuffayn (Leather Socks)
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
Wiping is superior to washing. This view is attributed to Ahmad, Shafi'i, Al-Hakam, and Ishaq. The evidence cited is that the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his companions sought what was superior, and Allah loves that His concessions (rukhsah) be taken. It is also narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) never chose between two matters except that he chose the easier one. Furthermore, taking the concession opposes the practice of innovators. Sufyan al-Thawri stated that writing is useless unless one considers wiping superior to washing the feet.
Supporting text
Washing is considered superior because it is the prescribed action in the Book of Allah, while wiping is a concession. Ibn Umar narrated that he preferred washing his feet, indicating washing is the preferred method for him personally, although he instructed others to wipe.
