Does *Tayammum* performed due to necessity actually lift the ritual impurity (Hadath)?

Primary text

The consensus of scholars, including Malik and Al-Shafi'i, is that *Tayammum* purification does not lift the ritual impurity when water is found; rather, upon finding water, the required purification (Wudu or Ghusl) must be performed, whether the person was in a state of major or minor impurity before the *Tayammum*. The evidence is that if water is found, the individual must use it to remove the prior impurity (if they were in a state of major impurity, *Janabah*, or minor impurity, or if a menstruating woman found water after having performed *Tayammum*). If *Tayammum* lifted the impurity, all those finding water would be equal in status, which is not the case. Furthermore, *Tayammum* is a purification of necessity, and thus does not lift the impurity, similar to the purification of a woman with *Istihada* (abnormal bleeding).

Supporting text

It is narrated from Abu Hanifa that it does lift the impurity, analogous to water purification, because *Tayammum* is a purification that permits prayer, thus it lifts the impediment.
