When does the three-day limit for wiping over leather socks begin for a traveler who performs ablution (wudu) while resident but later travels before wiping?
Chapter on Wiping over the Khuffayn (Leather Socks)
Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
There is consensus among scholars that if one does not wipe before traveling and subsequently begins wiping while traveling, they complete the wiping period of a traveler (three days and nights). This is based on the Prophet's saying: "The traveler wipes for three days and nights," indicating the ruling applies from the time they begin wiping while in the state of travel. This is the apparent position of Imam Ahmad, as well as the Madhahib of al-Thawri, al-Shafi'i, and the Ashab al-Ra'y. The basis for this is the apparent meaning of the Hadith and the argument that the period preceding the wipe was a time when prayer by wiping was not permissible, and thus should not count towards the duration, similar to the time before the initial minor impurity (hadath) occurred.

An alternative narration reported from Imam Ahmad, and attributed to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), suggests the duration starts from the moment one wipes after having the minor impurity. One narration states: 'Wipe until the hour you wiped previously,' and another: 'The traveler wipes until the hour he performed wudu.'
