Primary text

Wudu is obligatory after consuming camel meat, irrespective of whether it is cooked or raw, and regardless of whether the consumer is knowledgeable of the ruling or ignorant thereof. This view is held by Jabir ibn Samurah, Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Ishaq, Abu Khaythama, Yahya ibn Yahya, Ibn al-Mundhir, and it represents one of the two opinions attributed to Al-Shafi'i. The general consensus among the Hadith scholars supports this view.

A dissenting view, held by Al-Thawri, Malik, Al-Shafi'i, and the People of Opinion (Ahl al-Ra'y), states that camel meat does not nullify Wudu under any circumstances. Their evidence is the narration from Ibn Abbas, on the authority of the Prophet (peace be upon him), stating: 'Wudu is required for what exits, not what enters,' and a narration from Jabir indicating that the final practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was abandoning Wudu for what has been touched by fire.
