Primary text

If a person intends their *Tayammum* for a mandatory prayer (*Fard*), they are permitted to pray any obligatory or supererogatory (Nafl) prayer, whether they specified a particular *Fard* or intended an absolute *Fard*. This is because the intention for the higher act (Fard) encompasses the intention for the lesser act (Nafl), and by permitting the former, the latter is permitted consequently.

If a person intends only a supererogatory prayer or an absolute (unspecified) prayer, they are only permitted to pray supererogatory prayers. Abu Hanifa held that they could pray anything, analogizing it to water purification, where purity permitting Nafl also permits Fard. The correct view relies on the Hadith: 'Actions are only by intentions, and for every man is what he intended.' Since the Fard was not intended, it is not attained. Water purification is different because it removes the impediment (impurity) preventing all prayer.
