Is washing the face obligatory in both major and minor purification?

Washing the face is obligatory in both major purification (Ghusl) and minor purification (Wudu). This is the established view in the Madhhab, supported by Ibn al-Mubarak, Ibn Abi Layla, and Ishaq. It is also attributed to 'Ata. Another narration from Ahmad states that only rinsing the nose (Istinshaq) is obligatory.
