Primary text

Washing the feet is obligatory according to the majority of scholars. Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, reportedly agreed upon washing the feet. Evidence pointing to washing includes narrations detailing the Prophet's ablution where he washed both feet multiple times up to the ankles. Furthermore, commands concerning washing were given to one who left a spot the size of a coin unwashed on his foot, ordering him to repeat his ablution and prayer, and another severe warning was issued regarding the heels being exposed to the Fire, implying neglect of washing. The command for wiping the fingers (takhleel al-asabi') and the action of rubbing them with the pinky finger also indicate washing, as wiping does not necessitate this level of thoroughness.

Supporting text

Some scholars, following the literal reading of the Quranic verse {and your feet up to the ankles} (Quran 5:6) with the accusative case (Nasb), argue that it should be connected to the washing of the hands, thus mandating washing. Others argue that the allowance for wiping is supported by narrations where the Prophet (PBUH) poured water over his feet while wearing sandals, suggesting a lighter action than full washing. It is also suggested that the Arabs sometimes use the term 'wiping' (masah) to refer to light washing.
