Is wiping the ears included in the obligation of wiping the head during Wudu?

The ears are subsidiary to the head and cannot be substituted for wiping the head itself. The apparent position from Abu 'Abdillah (Ahmad) is that wiping the ears is not obligatory, even when complete wiping of the head is required, because the term 'head' when used generally only refers to the area bearing hair.
