Primary text
Wiping over a bandage (khirqa) or dressing covering a wound is permissible when there is a fear of harm from using water on the injury. This applies whether the wound is a simple cut or a more severe injury (jarh). Imam Ahmad permits wiping over the covering when water endangers the wound. The ruling regarding the companion who had a head wound (shajah) applies to wiping over the bandage covering the head wound because a 'shajah' specifically denotes a head wound, and the covering acts as a barrier where washing would cause harm, thus equating it to wiping over a set bone fracture.
