Al-Mughni
Book of Purification
Primary text
Wiping over the leather socks (Khuffayn) during ablution is permissible according to the general body of scholars. Ibn al-Mundhir narrated that Ibn al-Mubarak stated there is no disagreement regarding its permissibility. Al-Hasan reported that seventy Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) informed him that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) wiped over the Khuffayn. Al-Bukhari narrated that Sa'd ibn Malik, Al-Mughirah, and 'Amr ibn Umayyah witnessed the Prophet (peace be upon him) wiping over the Khuffayn. Jareer ibn Abdullah narrated that he performed ablution and wiped over his Khuffayn; when questioned, he stated he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) doing so, and affirmed his conversion occurred after the revelation of Surah Al-Ma'idah. This permissibility is strongly supported by forty Hadiths from the Companions, as stated by Ahmad, indicating widespread practice reaching the Prophet (peace be upon him) or being accepted by him.
