Is wiping over wrapped cloth or rags permitted during ablution?

Wiping over wraps (*Lifa'if*) or rags is not permissible. This ruling is affirmed by Ahmad. He clarified that even if people in the mountains wrap their legs up to the mid-calf, wiping over this assembly is invalid unless it constitutes a sock (*jurub*). The reason is that a wrap does not stay in place by itself; it requires binding to remain fixed, and there is no known disagreement on this point regarding wraps.
