Primary text
In every instance where the contest (musabaqah) is voided, if the stipulated prize (al-sabq) was provided by the loser (the one who was to give the prize), the winner retains the prize. If the prize was provided by the winner (the one who was to receive the prize), the winner is entitled to the fair wage (ajr al-mithl) for their effort, because they performed work for a consideration that was not fully secured, which is treated like a void hire contract.
