Primary text
If a third party, who contributes nothing to the stakes, is introduced between the two competitors, the competition becomes permissible. This view is held by Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, al-Zuhri, al-Awza'i, Ishaq, and the companions of Ray' (Ahl al-Ra'y).
Supporting text
A narration from Ashhab attributes a statement to Malik where he indicates he does not favor the use of the *muḥallil*. Furthermore, Jabir ibn Zayd, when told that the Companions did not see harm in the *dakhīl* (interloper/muḥallil), replied that they were more honorable than that.
