The ruling of the Aqiqah is analogous to that of the Udhiyah (slaughter for Eid al-Adha) concerning its legislated age and permissible defects. The same attributes that are desirable in the Udhiyah are desirable in the Aqiqah, as evidenced by Aisha's statement demanding an animal 'white-eyed, horned.' Ata preferred a male over a female, and sheep over goats. The minimum requirement is a Jadha' of sheep or a Thani of goat. Imperfections such as obvious blindness, obvious lameness, pronounced sickness, extreme thinness, or mutilation (loss of more than half of the ear or horn) disqualify the animal. Attributes like defects in the eye or ear margin, split ear (sharqaa), pierced ear (kharqaa), or one whose front or back has been cut (muqabalah or mudabarah) are disliked.
