Primary text

The division of the meat among the partners is permissible. The command of the Prophet to share in the sacrifice, combined with the Sunnah of eating from the hadi of the pilgrim and the voluntary sacrifice, indicates the permissibility of division, as no single participant can fulfill the requirement of eating or giving charity/gifts without division. Furthermore, division is not considered a sale but rather the formal separation of established rights.

Some associates of Al-Shafi'i have argued against division on the basis that division is equivalent to sale, and selling the meat of the hadi or voluntary sacrifice is impermissible.
