Primary text

It is recommended that a Muslim performs the slaughter, as the act is one of ritual worship, which should ideally be performed by one qualified for such worship. If a non-Muslim is appointed as the agent for slaughter, it is permissible but disliked (Makruh). This is the view held by Al-Shafi'i, Abu Thawr, and Ibn al-Mundhir.

Supporting text

A stricter opinion, narrated from Ahmad, holds that only a Muslim may perform the slaughter. This view is held by Malik, and it was disliked by Ali, Ibn Abbas, and Jabir. The evidence cited is the narration that 'None should slaughter the rites except a Muslim,' and that the fats of animals slaughtered by them become forbidden to us, which is considered akin to destroying the offering.
