Primary text

It is permissible to store the meat of the sacrificial animal (Udhiyah) beyond three days, according to the general scholarly opinion. The evidence for this permission is the Hadith where the Prophet, peace be upon him, stated: 'I had forbidden you from storing sacrificial meat beyond three days, so keep what you wish.' This narration is recorded by Muslim. Furthermore, Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: 'I only forbade you concerning the sudden influx of meat [from the obligatory sacrifice, meaning for general use/sale], so eat, store provisions, give charity, and save [for later].' Ahmad commented that there are authentic chains of narration supporting this abrogation.

Supporting text

Ali and Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, did not permit storing the meat beyond three days because they heard the initial prohibition from the Prophet, peace be upon him, but the subsequent permission did not reach them, so they narrated based on what they heard.
