Primary text
It is established practice that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed Tahnik for the children of the Ansar using dates. In the narration involving Abdullah ibn Abi Talhah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) chewed dates, then opened the infant's mouth and spat them into it. The infant then began to lick them. The Prophet (peace be upon him) then named the child Abdullah, noting the love of the Ansar for dates.
