What is the preferable characteristic for the sacrificial animal?

While valid sacrifices exist despite minor defects, the best sacrifice is one that is complete in form. The Prophet, peace be upon him, sacrificed a horned, black-and-white ram (*ka’bsh aqrān amlaḥ*). He stated, "The best sacrifice is the horned ram," and commanded seeking out the best in eye and ear.
