Primary text

If the time for the obligatory sacrifice has passed, the required sacrifice must be performed as a replacement (Qada). The resulting meat is then treated as meat from a regular slaughtered animal, not an Eid sacrifice. The person is free to choose regarding voluntary sacrifices. If the animal's meat is distributed, the act of charity is fulfilled through the distribution, not the act of slaughter, because the animal is considered merely meat, not an Eid offering. This is the position held by Al-Shafi'i.

Supporting text

Abu Hanifa holds that the animal should be given to the poor without slaughtering it. If it is slaughtered, the person is liable for the depreciation in value caused by the slaughter because the requirement for slaughter has lapsed due to missing its proper time.
