What is the ruling on mentioning the name of someone other than God during the slaughter?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Sacrifices (Uḍḥiyah)
Primary text
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated, 'O God, accept it from Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and the Ummah of Muhammad,' followed by the slaughter. In another narration, he said, 'O God, from You and for You, on behalf of Muhammad and his Ummah, In the name of God, and God is the Greatest.' This narration explicitly confirms the permissibility of dedicating the sacrifice to others.
Supporting text
Abu Hanifa disliked mentioning the name of anyone other than God, citing the Quranic verse: 'And that which has been slaughtered upon which is mentioned other than the name of Allah' (Quran 2:173). However, the explicit Hadith regarding the Prophet's supplication overrides this interpretation.
