A minority holds that it is obligatory. This view is attributed to Rabi'ah, Malik, al-Thawri, al-Awza'i, al-Layth, and Abu Hanifah, based on the narration from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said, "Whoever has capacity (saw'ah) and does not sacrifice, let him not approach our place of prayer." Another supporting narration is from Makhnaf ibn Sulaym, where the Prophet said, "O people, upon every household, every year, there is an Udhiyah and an 'Aqiqah."
