Is the consumption of Theriac (Tiryāq) permissible?
Chapter on Selling the Musarrah (Animal with milk retained in udder)
Al-Mughni
Book of Sales
Primary text
The consumption of Theriac is prohibited because it contains the flesh of snakes. Consequently, its sale is impermissible because its benefit is derived solely from consumption, which is unlawful. It lacks permissible benefit and is thus treated like carrion (maytah). Furthermore, using it for medical treatment or using venom from snakes is forbidden.
