Returning the equivalent measure for items measured by volume (makil) or weight (mawzun) in a loan is obligatory. There is no known difference of opinion on this matter. Consensus among scholars whose views we retain confirms that when one enters into a loan contract for an object that can be measured by volume or weight, returning its equivalent measure is permissible, and the lender has the right to accept it. This obligation is analogous to compensation for usurped or destroyed items of the same type, which is assessed by their equivalent measure.
