What is the linguistic meaning of 'Riba' (usury/interest)?

Linguistically, Riba signifies increase or excess. This is evidenced in the Quran where Allah states, "And when We send down upon it water, it vibrates and grows (warabat)" (Quran 22:5) and "that one nation may be more numerous (arbā) than another nation" (Quran 16:92). To say 'arbā fulan 'alā fulan' means that so-and-so increased over another.
