Primary text
The sale of 'Araya can occur in two forms. The first is when one states: 'I sell you the fruit of this palm tree for such and such amount of mature dates,' describing the quantity. The second form is when one measures out a quantity of mature dates equal to the estimate (*kharṣ*) of the fruit, and then states: 'I sell you this for that,' or 'I sell you the fruit of this palm tree for these dates,' or similar phrasing. If the sale involves a specific, existing quantity of dates (*mu'ayyan*), the exchange is completed by physical transfer and taking possession. If the sale involves specified-but-not-present dates (*mawṣūf*), completion occurs by measuring.
