Chapter on Selling the Musarrah (Animal with milk retained in udder)

Book of Sales
Primary text
If a purchased garment is spread out and a defect is discovered, the ruling depends on whether the spreading process itself diminishes the garment's value. If spreading it does not reduce its quality, the sale is revoked. This ruling is supported by general principles concerning acceptance of the sold item. If the spreading reveals a defect, the buyer has the option to return the item or accept compensation for the defect (arsh) in all circumstances.

If the garment is one whose value is diminished by spreading, such as the Hasaani fabric which is folded into two stuck layers, the ruling follows the detailed conditions concerning items like coconuts. This applies if the spreading does not exceed what is necessary to ascertain the item, or if it exceeds that limit, such as when a person who is unaware of the standard practice spreads it.
