Primary text

Raising a small dog for one of the three specified purposes is permissible based on the stronger view. This ruling is established because the intent behind raising it aligns with its intended permitted use, thus inheriting that ruling. This is analogous to the permissibility of selling a minor slave or a small colt (*jahsh*) that offers no immediate benefit, as the expectation is future utility. Furthermore, a dog cannot become trained for hunting unless it is raised and kept for a period sufficient for training. The evidence for this is found in the divine statement: And what you have taught of predatory animals that you have trained, teaching them of what Allah has taught you (Quran 5:4). A trained dog cannot exist without prior training.

The second view holds that raising a small dog is not permissible because it does not fall under the three specified purposes.
