What is the ruling concerning loss of a sown crop on rented land?
Chapter on Selling Assets and Fruits

Primary text
If a person rents land and sows a crop upon it, and the crop is destroyed, the lessor bears no liability. This is the position affirmed by Ahmad, and there is no known disagreement concerning this matter. The contract concerned the usufruct of the land, which was not destroyed; rather, the property of the lessee was destroyed within it. This situation is analogous to a case where one rents a house to press clothes and the clothes are destroyed inside the house.
