Primary text

When the underlying reason for usury differs between the two exchanged items, such as exchanging meat (which is measured by weight) for wheat (which is measured by volume), there are two narrations regarding the permissibility of delayed exchange. The first narration states that delayed exchange is forbidden because both are forms of wealth subject to usury, similar to exchanging volume for volume. The second narration permits delayed exchange, which is the view of Al-Nakha'i, because they do not share any single descriptive attribute of the reason for surplus usury, analogous to exchanging garments for livestock.
