What is the ruling on killing dogs in general?

There is a report indicating that the Prophet, peace be upon him, initially commanded the killing of all dogs, to the extent that a woman coming from the desert with her dog had it killed. Subsequently, he prohibited the killing of them generally, except for the specified black dog.
