Is the sale of materials like the feathers of birds of prey or the hides of predatory animals with fangs permitted?
Chapter on Selling the Musarrah (Animal with milk retained in udder)
Al-Mughni
Book of Sales
Primary text
The sale of items such as the feathers of birds that possess talons (mikhlab) or parts of the hides of carnivorous beasts that possess fangs (anyab) is considered easier in ruling. This is because the prohibition mentioned by the Prophet, peace be upon him, pertains only to consuming their flesh. However, the established sound opinion is that the sale of these items is not permissible. This rests upon the legal determination that the hides of dead animals are impure and are not purified through tanning, a matter established elsewhere.

The basis for the ruling concerning feathers and predatory hides being 'easier' stems from the understanding that the Prophet's prohibition was specifically against eating their flesh, suggesting a distinction from the ruling on the entire carcass.
