Primary text

Ahmad holds that there is no dispensation for selling Qur'an copies. The basis for this view is the consensus of the Companions (Sahaba) concerning its prohibition, and no dissenting opinions from their era are known. Furthermore, the Mushaf contains the divine Speech of Allah (Kalam Allah Ta'ala), necessitating its protection from selling and vulgarization. Scholars such as Ibn Umar, Ibn Abbas, Abu Musa, Sa'id ibn Jubayr, and Ishaq disliked selling them. Ibn Umar stated that he wished hands would be cut off for selling them.

Al-Hasan, Al-Hakam, Ikrimah, Al-Shafi'i, and the Ashab al-Ra'y permitted the selling of Qur'an copies, arguing that the sale pertains only to the leather and paper, the sale of which is permissible.
