Primary text
If separation occurs after puberty, it is permissible. This is evidenced by the incident where Salamah ibn al-Akwa' brought a woman and her daughter to Abu Bakr, who granted the daughter to him as a gift (*nafl*). The Prophet, peace be upon him, later requested the daughter from Abu Bakr, who gifted her to him. Additionally, when Mariyah and her sister Sirin were gifted to the Prophet, peace be upon him, he gave Sirin to Hassan ibn Thabit and kept Mariyah. This is justified because upon reaching maturity, an individual becomes independent, and separation between free persons is customary, such as when a woman marries her daughter's husband, or when separation occurs between a free woman and her child if the parents separate.
