Is compensation permissible for forgiving the Hadd punishment for slander (*Qadhf*)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Settlement
Primary text
A settlement concerning the Hadd punishment for slander (*Qadhf*) is invalid. If the right belongs to God, the individual has no right to receive compensation for it as it is not their personal right, thus resembling the Hadd for adultery and theft. If the right belongs to the individual, compensation is prohibited because the right is not monetary, unlike retribution (*Qisas*), which can be substituted. Furthermore, since slander punishment is established to protect one's honor, it is not permissible to exchange one's honor for money.

There are two legal opinions regarding whether the punishment for slander is waived by settlement. If it is considered a right belonging to God, neither the settlement nor the waiver by the individual waives it, similar to the Hadd for adultery and theft. If it is considered a right belonging to an individual, it is waived by their settlement and waiver, like *Qisas*.
