Is it permissible to combine two adjacent houses into one by removing the partition wall?

It is permissible for a man to combine two adjacent houses, where the back of each faces the back of the other, and the door of each opens into a non-thoroughfare alley (zaqaq ghair naafidh), by removing the partition wall between them and designating them as a single house.
