Primary text

If manumission is conditioned upon an event unrelated to the master's death, such as 'If you enter the house,' or 'If Zayd arrives,' or 'If God heals my sick person,' the slave does not attain the status of Mudabbir immediately. He only becomes Mudabbir and is manumitted upon the master's death if the condition is met during the master's lifetime. If the condition is not met during the master's life but is met after his death, the slave is not manumitted because imposing the condition is understood to require its occurrence during the master's life, analogous to suspending an immediate manumission ('If you enter the house, you are free'); if the entry occurs after death, manumission does not take place. Furthermore, Tadbir requires the suspension of manumission upon death; if the status is not established before death, it cannot be established afterward.
