Primary text

The Prophet (PBUH) permitted poetry recited during battles like Badr and Uhud, with the exception of the poem by Umayyah ibn Abi as-Salt al-Ha'iyyah. Moreover, poetry such as that recited by Qays ibn al-Khatim, which included praise for 'Umrah bint Rawahah, and the poem by Ka'b ibn Zuhayr which mentioned the woman Su'ad, were heard and recited without condemnation. The practice of narrating such poetry is established and not denied. When Nu'man ibn Bashir heard poetry mentioning his mother, he permitted its continuation, stating the poet had said nothing wrong, only praising her nobility.
