Primary text

When one has been entrusted to give testimony (*istir'a'a ash-shahadah*), the required phrasing is to state: 'I bear witness that [full name of witness], whom I know by sight, name, lineage, and upright character, testified to me that [full name of claimant] has a claim against [full name of defendant] amounting to such and such, or that [full name of party] admitted to me such and such.' The mention of the witness's upright character (*'adalah*) is omitted if their character is unknown.
