Scholars have reached consensus on the validity of testimony based on widespread knowledge (Istifadah) for matters of lineage (Nasab) and birth. Ibn al-Mundhir stated that he knows of no scholar who prohibited this, as knowledge of lineage is otherwise impossible to establish definitively without it, and direct observation is not feasible. If direct observation were required, no one would know their father, mother, or relatives. Evidence is drawn from the Quran: "Those who were given a share of the Scripture recognize him (the Prophet) as they recognize their own sons" (Quran 2:146).
