Primary text

The testimony of one friend in favor of another friend is accepted according to the general scholarly opinion. The evidence for this acceptance rests upon the general proofs regarding testimony. The argument that such testimony is self-beneficial and thus suspect is refuted by comparing it to the testimony of a creditor regarding a debtor before sequestration; the creditor's potential benefit is far greater, yet their testimony is considered valid. The basis of enmity is prohibited, and testifying against an enemy serves to quench spite, which is contrary to the nature of friendship.

Supporting text

Malik holds that the testimony of a flattering friend is not accepted because it draws a benefit to the self, rendering the friend suspect, similar to the testimony of an enemy against their enemy.
