Who bears liability for the value of a slave when judgment is passed for freedom?

Primary text
When a ruling of freedom is established, the original owner may hold either the seller or the buyer liable for the slave's value on the day of manumission. If the seller is held liable, the seller may then seek recourse against the buyer because the destruction (loss of property status through manumission) originated with the buyer. However, if the buyer is held liable first, the buyer can only seek recourse against the seller for the purchase price, as the ultimate cause of the loss (the act leading to the loss of ownership) stemmed from the buyer's action.
