What is the required compensation for causing damage resulting in partial loss of value in property?

The required compensation for any damaged property is equivalent to the reduction in its value. This is the position held by Al-Shafi'i. The purpose of the guarantee is to mend the owner's right by imposing the exact amount of what was lost. If the entirety of the property were lost, its full value would be due; therefore, if only a portion is lost, its corresponding portion of the value is due, similar to non-living possessions.
