The ruling follows the status of the thread used to suture the animal's wound. An alternative ruling suggests that if the jewel's value exceeds the animal's value, the animal must be slaughtered to return the object to its owner. The usurper remains liable for the value of the animal, unless the animal is a human being. This distinction is made because a thread is typically less valuable than the animal, whereas a jewel is generally more valuable, thus slaughtering the animal reconciles the owner's right to recover his property and the usurper's right to minimize his liability.
