Primary text

Consecutive fasting is not required when one vows to fast thirty days. This position is explicitly stated by Ahmad. This is deduced because the duration is specified by count rather than by the designation 'month'.

Supporting text

A narration from Ahmad suggests that vowing to fast ten days necessitates fasting them consecutively. Some of our colleagues interpret Ahmad's statement as applying only when the vow explicitly includes the condition or intention of consecutive fasting, as the term 'ten days' does not inherently imply continuity. Others maintain Ahmad's statement applies literally, obligating continuity for ten days but not for thirty, arguing that specifying thirty days instead of 'a month' indicates an intent for separation.
