Does fasting a specific year mentioned in a vow include the month of Ramadan?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Vows
Primary text
Fasting in Ramadan is not included in a vow to fast a specific year because Ramadan cannot be substituted by any other fast, similar to nights. The two Eid days are also excluded because the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade fasting on them, and their fast cannot fulfill the vow, thus resembling Ramadan. This opinion is considered the sounder one.
Supporting text
According to one narration from Ahmad concerning one who vows to fast the month of Shawwal, he must make up the fast for the day of Eid al-Fitr and offer expiation. Based on this narration, the two Eids and the days of Tashreeq would be included in the vow of fasting a year because they are part of the year.
